A Collection of Antique Medical and Surgical Instruments

About Phisick

The collection started out as a handful of items which were used for display and teaching purposes in a London based general practice.

Papier-Mache Model Head (Dr Auzoux)

Conche Shell Ear Trumpet

Acquired from auction houses, antique fairs and bric-a-brac shops in the UK, Europe and America, and as far afield as Asia and the Australias.

It seemed a shame to have these rare and beautifully crafted antiques locked away out of sight - hence the birth of the 'Phisick' website.

Mother of Pearl Lancet Case

Martins Margin Spectacles

The number of pieces has grown over time and the process of cataloguing and developing the collection has become a true labour of love.

In coming months I plan to publish articles looking at the roles that some of these instruments have played in our medical history.

Cased Pleximeter and Percussor

How to Use the Site

Links in the left hand menu take you to nine topic sections where you can click on the small icons at the top of the pages to view more detailed pictures. Or you can browse through the whole collection one at a time by selecting red arrows for 'next category item'.

The photographs largely speak for themselves so the descriptions have been left deliberately brief. However, there is often more information available, so please ask if you have questions. I have tried to be as accurate as possible to which end your feedback is always a great help and is much appreciated.

This is intended to be primarily an educational site. However I do sell some items and if you are interested in a piece feel free to ask, but bear in mind that many of them are not for sale. I am always interested in buying good quality medical surgical or dental antique instruments and I will also consider trade or exchange.

Newly Added Items

Returning to the site for a review? Go straight to the New Items section to see the recent additions (last updated on 7th April 2008). Have you visited our new Dental section? We have finally reinstated the Search page for Phisick which is in the top right corner of each page
