19th Century Dental De-Scaler |
|
Early
19th C Rosewood Tooth Key (Mathieu) |
| |
|
|
|

A fine dental de-scaler in its
original tan leather box which is lined with purple velvet and green
silk. The de-scaler is in mint condition and has obviously had
minimal use. The ivory handle is in perfect condition. The steel
shaft has some early signs of corrosion but the point remains in
perfect shape. |
|

A dental tooth key signed by Mathieu
from the early 19th C. The handle is carved in the typical French
style from a dark hardwood which I think is rosewood. The shaft is
attached with a steel band around the handle. In excellent consition
with some early age related pitting at the proximal end of the shaft
and with the bolster and clasp in perfect condition. |

Royal Ebony rotating Tooth Key |
|
18th C Goats Foot Dental Elevator |
| |
|
|
|

A beautiful French dental tooth key
with an unusual mechanism which allow the clasp to be rotated. The
bolster is circular with four notches which when secured by a lever
on the shaft keep the clasp in the desired position. The lever is
sunk into the body of the shaft and pivots up and down when pressure
is applied over the thumb rest. The distal 3mm of the securing lever
is missing but the instrument is otherwise in excellent condition.
The handle is made from Royal Ebony and is finely carved with
concentric rings at either end. Unsigned. |

Pelicans frequently left the remnants
of the dental root which required instruments to prize them from
their sockets. The goats foot elevator was named because of the
appearance of its deeply cleft head which was hollowed between two
points. This instrument was sometimes used to loosen a tooth or root
before extraction by other means. The octagonal handle in the style
of Garengot is made from ebony. |

A simple elevator but with a similar
appearance and function to the goats foot elevator. The shaft is
made from tempered steel. The handle is made from rounded and
smoothly polished ebony which allows pressure to be applied though
the hollow of the palm.
