Literally "Life awakener". A rare
instrument 30cm long made from ebony. Pressure at the narrow end
pushes a series of very sharp needles into the longsuffering
patient. The theory was that this would act as a counter irritant
and so distract the body's focus away from the main site of injury,
say for example an adjacent abscess. |
