This early 20th C
apparatus was made by the genito-urinary MFG.
Co.Ltd from 26a Devonshire
Street, London W.1. Despite the name it is not urological
in function, but is an apparatus designed to induce a pneumothorax (a
collapse of the lung). This procedure was performed on
patients with tuberculosis in the belief that TB was
less likley to spread through deflated lung and that
healing would be accelerated. After a thoracotomy
incision, the canular was passed into the intrapleural
space and gas would be blown into the
cavity, forcing the lung to collapse.
An example can be seen at the
London science museum
website. The case has original
hinges and lock but no key and measures 7" x 9" x 4 1/2". |
